When my plan blew up overnight, I had to decide what I would do next. Through choosing to do the hard thing and sticking with it, I kept in mind the person I wanted to be.
Our dogs poked their noses against the car windows as the fields of Nebraska flashed by, and I was gripped in a total panic. Just in time for our 1800-mile trek from Chicago to Las Vegas to move closer to my wife’s family, I got the call that I was let go from my position along with the majority of my fellow new employees. I hung up the phone and everything was a blur. We found ourselves in Vegas after three days of driving, and I had to decide what to do next.
Being let go for the first time ever after over a decade of success in Fortune 500 corporate sales took me back to the time when the bank foreclosed on my childhood home when I was only 16 years old. Before that moment, I thought I had hundreds of friends, but only a few stood by me when my family was forced to move to an apartment on the wrong side of the tracks. It was rough, but I then realized the importance of showing up.
I knew I wanted to go into real estate before we moved to Las Vegas, so I went all in at that point. Of course, there were moments of doubt, but my wife, Maria, was a huge supporter and urged me to stick to my goals. In those trying moments, I also remembered that though it seemed safer to go back to the corporate world, it meant giving up control of my own success and my family’s future.
As a young man, I had made the conscious decision to show up no matter what. If you are stuck in jail in a foreign country with one phone call to make, I AM the guy you want to call. There is no way on God’s green earth that I would not be there for you. I know what it is like to have others bail when things get tough, so I don’t bail, even on myself. With Maria’s support and the resilience I learned through athletics as a child, I always found the courage to keep going.
I have never been naturally talented or a quick learner, but my superpowers are being resilient and persistent. If I set my mind to a task, I may complain here and there, but there is no way I will not achieve it if I am still breathing. While keeping that in mind, I eventually realized it all comes down to what kind of human being we want to be. I am the type of person that no matter how hard it gets or how many times I get knocked down, I will get up again and go another round.
I worked hard to build my real estate business, and though the first year was challenging, I found my momentum shortly thereafter and have since grown my business year over year, eclipsing $20 million+ in personal sales in 2021 alone. I also took that personal success and built the brand of The Russell Haver Group in 2021 with 11 team members and staff, and we are continuing to grow each day. It was not the easiest or most straightforward journey, but I always knew it would be worth it.
